When a man enthusiastically drags you to a Loden shop in Vienna, your first reaction is “Do you really want to play Von Trapp?”
Admittedly, however, after feeling quite lost amidst the perplexing variety of colors and designs, when I took a closer look and certainly when I made the leap of faith to try something on, my appreciation started to evolve.
The warm material and smooth woolen or soft leather texture of the jackets on my body, as well as the fine detailed leather lining, the shiny velvet finishing of the collars, the subtle embroidered floral elements and the silver/copper-colored engraved buttons undoubtedly convinced me of their elegance.
The modest Tyrolean origin of Loden capes, jackets and coats still gives them a traditional feel, but the Austrians have found the recipe to blend the right specs of old with generous luxury portions of new. True, certain pieces may seem out of date, but, if you are willing to "pay the price", there are still many gems that can be worn today by all ages.
I can consider it a fashion statement. You just need to have an eye for it, combine it correctly, give it a modern twist and show the courage to stand out from the crowd.
