If you still consider the mix-and-deliberately-unmatched prints of Roberto Cavalli as number one in unconventional eye-catchers, if you think that only Pucci is the master of colorful geometric patterning, you have not yet experienced PINKO.
These Italian designer clothes and accessories combine flair, girliness, femininity, and the right drops of daring cross-over attitude and edginess. Who would have thought that our popular Coca-Cola would become a jeweled logo on a fire red laced see-through sweater with boyfriend sleeves and striped, tracksuit-like elastic bands flowing down the arms? Andy Warhol's perception of pop culture met vintage lace as it sprang into couture last winter with the capsule Coca-Cola collection, which has sold extremely well in Knokke. "Knokke is a special market and it is ready for the Coca-Cola collection" confirmed store manager Florine upon arrival of the new store items. She was confident and quite justifiably, as proven in the course of the last few months.
Spring/Summer 2017 will be showered with color, a palette of basically hot red, canary yellow, green, sky blue. The military look is also present with khaki jackets and a pencil skirt with colorful old-timer cars in pastel pink and light blue scattered on a camouflage background. The collection is actually inspired by Cuba: the sun, the sea, the exoticism of its nature and the extrovert passion of the people. To my eyes, military elements serve as a carrier of the khaki which does not substitute but complements the gray we got so much used to (and some of us perhaps tired of) last season. It provides a more interesting color that can be matched with a shinier and more vibrant pastel pink with a salmon undertone. The playful, military-inspired skirt combined with the pink light-reflecting retro disco top I spotted would be the perfect outfit to the Encuentro de Aroma de Cuba this September.
What makes it even more interesting is that the color shades remain the same and are repeated throughout the ss17 collection. This allows for the effortless marriage of most garments and accessories in the store - quite addictive and contagious, especially when you are shopping with friends. And thus, did I not leave the spring trunkshow in PINKO Knokke empty-handed! I found love in a Cuban-inspired floral pencil skirt and the matching embroidered IT PINKO bag! I added a waist-high black leather jacket with some studs, high heels and gave a tinge of roughness to intellectual femininity.
Women as intellectual consumers of high fashion are coming more into the spotlight, with giants Louis Vuitton and Chanel opening the way to haute couture in Cuba in 2016. Who knows, someday we might see these truly talented Caribbean islanders be more than a source of inspiration, and actually export more than hand-rolled tobacco delicacies, marching into the world of fashion as we know it. Far-away dream or not, till then, we can hold the aura and beauties of that land close to our skin with couture concoctions that recreate the spirit of Eva Mendes and the contour of Monica Bellucci.
