A key may refuse or allow access to a door, a secret cabinet, a music box or a diary. It may be a precious memoir of a childhood, or reflect a binding promise for the future. Some key-bearers prefer to keep it away from indiscreet eyes. Others hang it protectively round their neck, so as to feel it closer to their chest.
Barbara Deriemaeker has transformed keys into paired pendant ornaments that symbolize the special relationship between a mother and a daughter. A mother may hold the key to her daughter’s dreams, aspirations, secrets, fears, hesitations, and as the girl moves into womanhood, vice versa. The magical part is that these keys gain a totally personal meaning in each mother-daughter relationship, because every human bond - no matter how imperfect it may be - is simply unlike any other.
Design-wise, the gold-plated modern baroque-like key has been reproduced in two size versions. The almost identical yet different in size, hand-made, rough-surfaced pendants hang from two light silver chains of uneven lengths, which offer two combination options: the pendants can be worn either by two ladies or even by one person at the same time. What expecting mother wouldn’t cherish the idea of holding the key to her daughter’s heart – at least before she has to start competing with a handsome 15-year-old classmate? What daughter doesn't feel the unbreakable connection to the person who showed her the light of day?
Bearing in mind that "a golden key can open any door", I can only imagine what gates I can slam open with two... Thus, the BAR Jewels mother-daughter key pendants have already gained a meaning for me and a permanent spot in my accessories box. They accentuate glam in my sport outfit, they add a girly and fun touch to my monochrome T-shirts and they will soon look spectacular as they touch the curves of a bikini top and sparkle through the water drops on my sun-kissed skin.
If you are less patient and more enthusiastic like me, you can unlock your imagination and make your own combinations much earlier than Mother's Day. Break a rule! When you're all keyed up, where's the fun in waiting anyway?
